I got a call out to Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad on a 2008 Hyundai Elantra that the owner said "just stopped starting." He'd already replaced the battery in the car, checked the starter, and had a shop tell him it might be a fuel pump. Two weeks and a couple hundred dollars into it, the car still wouldn't run.
When I got there, he showed me what it was doing. Cranks fine, fires for half a second, then dies. Every time. I looked at the cluster on the next attempt and the security indicator was flashing. That's not a fuel pump.
I asked him about the key. He had one key, been using it for a few years, and he kept it on a ring with probably a dozen other keys and a heavy metal fob from an old truck. I looked at the key head and there was a hairline crack running right through the plastic. The chip inside was compromised.
I cut him a new key blade to match the lock, programmed a fresh transponder to his immobilizer right there in his driveway, and tested it through four cold starts. Car ran every time. He stared at it like he was waiting for it to stall again.
The two weeks of chasing the wrong problem cost him more than my whole visit. The dealer had been booked out and told him to tow it in anyway.
