2000 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: If my key was stolen, can you wipe it so it will not start the car anymore?

Yes. When new keys are programmed on this vehicle, the process erases the previously stored key data from the immobilizer memory. Only the keys physically present during that session get written in. A stolen key that was registered before does not carry over. After the job is done, the old key will not start the car.

Q: My 2000 Elantra remote head key has the buttons built into the key itself. Is there a hidden emergency blade in there?

On a remote head key from this era, there is no separate hidden blade to slide out the way a modern smart fob works. The blade is the key. It is already exposed and integrated into the unit. The emergency access concern here is different: if the remote portion stops working, the blade still turns the door lock and the ignition, so you are not locked out just because the remote died.

Q: The remote buttons on my 2000 Elantra key stopped working but the car still starts fine. What is going on?

That split behavior points to the remote side of the key, not the transponder side. The transponder that talks to the immobilizer is separate from the remote receiver circuit. So the car starts because the transponder is still being read correctly.

Q: Can I program a replacement remote head key for my 2000 Elantra myself at home?

On vehicles from this era, some remote relearn sequences do exist that can be done without professional equipment, typically involving a specific sequence of steps with the ignition. However, that only covers the remote portion of the key, not the transponder enrollment. If you are adding a key where at least one working key already exists, there may be an onboard path for the remote pairing.

2000 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the Seacoast neighborhood of Imperial Beach reached out about a spare key for her 2000 Hyundai Elantra. She had one working key and wanted a backup before she ended up stranded. Simple enough job on paper.

When I pulled up, she mentioned she had already called around. One place quoted her something vague over the phone, no details on what was included, no mention of a license number. She looked them up and could not find a registered business name anywhere. She moved on.

She told me she checked my license before calling. That mattered to her, especially after the near-miss with the unlicensed operator. I told her I get that a lot, and honestly, I respect it.

The Elantra was sitting in her driveway. I read the vehicle, cut a replacement blade to match, and programmed the new remote head key on site. The transponder enrolled without any issues. She tested the lock, unlock, and ignition herself before I packed up.

No towing. No waiting days for a dealer appointment. Just a spare key in her hand, done in her driveway in Imperial Beach, for a fraction of what the dealer would have asked.

Hyundai Elantra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle an all-keys-lost situation on a 2000 Hyundai Elantra?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works on vehicles from this era before you even think about the dealer. Dealer all-keys-lost jobs involve towing if you cannot get the car there, which adds cost before they even look at it, plus parts markup and labor rates. A mobile locksmith comes to wherever the car is sitting, reads the vehicle, cuts a new key, and programs it on site. On a 2000 Elantra, this is a well-understood job.
