Cardiff-by-the-Sea sits on the coast just south of the main stretch of Encinitas, and a lot of the people out there are not close to much in terms of dealer options. There is no Infiniti store in Encinitas. The nearest one is a solid drive, and that drive only gets longer if you cannot move the car.

A Q50 owner in Cardiff called me on a weekday morning. He had one working key left and wanted a spare made before that last key became a problem. He had already called the dealer and gotten the usual answer: bring it in, we order by VIN, come back in a few days. He was not interested in making two trips plus paying dealer rates.

I pulled the PIN through the diagnostic port, cut the new key blade on site, programmed the fob, and enrolled it into the system.

Then the part I always do before I leave: walked every function. Door lock, door unlock, the trunk release, remote start if equipped, handle sensor on both front doors, and a full start cycle. He stood there watching, and when everything checked out he just said "that was fast."
