Bear Valley in Escondido is mostly residential, the kind of neighborhood where people leave early and come back late. When I got the call, the owner was already standing next to his Q50 in his driveway, dressed for work, going nowhere.
He had dropped the fob the night before. It hit the driveway edge-first, the back clip cracked, and the battery shifted just enough that the car threw a key-not-detected warning every time he got near the door handle. He replaced the CR2032 himself that morning, which was the right instinct, but the internal contact had a slight bend from the impact and the new battery was sitting off-center. I opened the fob on the hood of my van. Bent contact, straightened it, reseated the battery correctly. Walked his door handles, tested the push-button start from normal distance, ran all five buttons. Everything came back clean. The fob did not need to be replaced at all.
He had already called the dealer the night before and been quoted a wait for a replacement key to be ordered in. That process would have had him without a car for several days. His car never left the driveway, and he made it to work on time.
