2019 Infiniti Q50
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you are at my car?

For a standard add-a-key on the 2019 Q50, the programming portion through the OBD port typically runs 15 to 25 minutes. Total on-site time including cutting and a full function test lands around 30 to 45 minutes. All-keys-lost is a different situation. The vehicle security system requires security access and PIN retrieval before any new key can be registered. That process adds time, so plan for 60 to 90 minutes on site. Either way, one visit and you drive away.

Q: Can you get me a key faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The dealer process for a 2019 Q50 typically starts with ordering a VIN-matched fob, which can take several business days to arrive. Then you schedule the programming appointment on top of that. Owners on forums have reported waiting a week or more just to get to the programming step. I show up with the fob and the equipment. The job is done in one visit.

Q: My Q50 start button shows a key warning even though the fob battery is fresh. What is going on?

This comes up on the forums more than people expect. A fresh battery doesn't always mean the fob is communicating cleanly. A few things can cause this on the 2019 Q50. First, check how the battery is seated. If the CR2032 was put in with even slight contact pressure on one side, the fob can read the cell as present but still drop signal intermittently. Pull it, wipe both contacts, reseat it firmly.

Q: I have one working key for my Q50. Should I get a spare made now or wait until there is a problem?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on the 2019 Q50 takes more time and costs more than a simple add-a-key while you still have a working fob in hand. The process is different, the security access steps are longer, and you are also dealing with the situation under pressure instead of on your own schedule. One working key also means one point of failure. A spare is cheap compared to being locked out on a Sunday morning.

2019 Infiniti Q50 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Sunday morning, Third Avenue Village, Chula Vista. A yoga studio owner walked out after teaching her first class of the day and her Q50 just sat there.

No response from the fob, no door handle unlock, nothing. Push the start button inside and the dash showed a key-not-detected warning. The Infiniti dealer nearby was dark until Monday. Her second class was two hours out and she needed to get home and back.

My number was the one that picked up.

I was in the lot about 40 minutes later. Tested the fob first. The CR2032 was reading low enough to cause the whole thing, but even after swapping a fresh cell the fob wasn't pairing back to the car the way it should. The vehicle security system wasn't seeing it reliably. She needed a replacement fob programmed to the car, not just a battery.

I pulled out the diagnostic setup, connected through the OBD port, and walked through the key registration process. New fob matched to her vehicle. Then I did the full check before putting anything away: door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock, trunk release, and start. Walked to the far end of the lot to check range. Everything held.

She made it to her second class. The dealer would have been a Monday appointment at minimum, probably Tuesday by the time the key arrived and got scheduled. She didn't wait. That's the point.

Infiniti Q50 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need an Infiniti key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Call me directly. Infiniti's dealer service department in this area is closed evenings and Sundays, and Infiniti Roadside Assistance handles lockouts and towing, but actual key programming waits until the dealer opens and a part is ordered. That can mean your car sits for two or three days before anyone touches it. I work evenings and weekends throughout Chula Vista, including the Third Avenue Village area. One call, and I come to wherever the car is.
