She called around 9:45 at night from the pharmacy lot up in Del Mar Heights. Her 2023 Q50 had gone cold on her, push-to-start showing nothing, no crank, no response. She was an overnight pharmacist and her shift ran until 7am. The car sitting dead in that lot was not a tomorrow problem.

When I got there I ran a 12V battery load test first, before touching anything else. The battery was borderline, holding a surface voltage that looked acceptable but collapsing under load. What had likely happened was a slow voltage decline that finally dipped low enough during the last shutdown to cause the immobilizer to lose the fob pairing. The key itself was fine. I stabilized the 12V system first, then connected my programming tool through the OBD port and re-registered her fob to the vehicle. The car came back to life on the first press of the start button.
She pulled into a better-lit spot and finished her shift. The problem was never the fob, never the key, and never anything that needed a dealer's service bay. It was a dying battery that took the key pairing down with it when it finally gave up.
She mentioned she'd been seeing a slow crank for a couple of weeks. That detail matters. On these Q50s, slow crank is the warning the battery is already on the way out. If she'd caught it a week earlier, the programming job probably never would have happened.
