I was parked near the Heritage Park area in Old Poway on a Saturday afternoon when a call came in. A woman had driven out from the coast for a weekend trip and her only key had stopped doing anything. But I stayed and ran through the whole key. Walked the locks, tested every button, cycled the ignition, checked that the immobilizer was reading the key cleanly without hesitation. She mentioned it had been "a little slow to start" a few times lately. That's worth knowing. A transponder that's reading weak shows up as a delayed crank, not always a full no-start, so I wanted to confirm the signal was solid before calling it done.

It was solid. Clean read, fast start, all five buttons working.

She asked what the dealer would have charged to diagnose that. I told her they probably would have started with an hour of labor before touching anything. She'd been ready for that. Instead she was back on the road in under twenty minutes, still had the rest of her afternoon, and paid a fraction of what a dealer visit would have run.

That's the job sometimes. Not every call is a full replacement. But I check everything either way.
