2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to me in Scripps Ranch?

Scripps Ranch is a regular run for me. Most calls in that area I can reach in 30 minutes or less depending on where exactly you are and what time of day it is. When you call, I confirm the year, model, and key situation for your Grand Cherokee, load what I need, and come straight to you. Jeep dealer key appointments in San Diego are rarely same-day.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. I carry the blanks and programming equipment for the 2017 Grand Cherokee on every call. Nothing gets special-ordered, nothing ships from a warehouse, no appointment needed for next week. Grand Cherokee owners on Jeep forums describe showing up to a scheduled dealer appointment only to find the key blank was never ordered. Some describe being turned away and rescheduled. That's not a one-off complaint.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my Grand Cherokee?

Sometimes, with a caveat. The fob has to be the correct unit for your vehicle. The 2017 Grand Cherokee uses a specific 5-button smart fob, and there are lookalike units floating around online that are not compatible, even if they appear identical. If the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what your vehicle calls for, I can pair it using my equipment. If it's the wrong unit, programming will fail regardless of what the seller claimed.

Q: My Grand Cherokee starts fine but the passive door handles stopped responding. Is the fob bad?

Not necessarily. If push-button start still works, the vehicle security system is reading the fob just fine. Passive entry on the door handles runs through a separate antenna circuit, and on the WK2-generation Grand Cherokee, owners report that one handle dropping out while others keep working is a known pattern pointing to the handle sensor or that door's antenna, not the fob itself. Clean the handle area and retest.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday morning in Scripps Ranch. A bakery owner had parked her 2017 Grand Cherokee the night before without a problem. She came back after setting up her booth at the market and nothing worked. The fob wouldn't unlock the doors. The push-button start sat there silent. The display was out, product was on the table, and the dealer's phone went to a weekend recording.

She found me online and called. I was the only number that picked up.

I got to her in the market lot in about 40 minutes. Tested the fob first. The CR2032 was completely flat, which explained the no-start, but even with a fresh cell in there the vehicle security system wasn't seeing the fob the way it should. The transponder side had lost its pairing. A battery swap alone wasn't going to fix this one.

I pulled my programming equipment and got to work through the OBD port. Built a new key, enrolled it to her vehicle, and deleted the old fob from the system so it couldn't be used by anyone who found it. Then I walked through every function: passive entry on both front handles, lock, unlock, and the push-button start. Everything came back clean.

She finished the market day, packed her display, and drove home. Total time on site was under an hour. The dealer would have had her waiting until Monday morning at the earliest, and even then, booking a key appointment at most Jeep dealerships around San Diego is not a same-day conversation. That part didn't come up much. She was already loading her car.

How long does a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee key replacement take?▼

If you have one working key and just need a spare added, figure 20 to 40 minutes on site. The programming side on these isn't complicated when there's an existing enrolled key in the system to work alongside. All-keys-lost is a different job. The vehicle security system needs to be accessed and reset before a new key can be enrolled, and that process has a timed sequence built in.
