Out in Fernbrook, on the edge of Ramona where the avocado groves run along the hillside, a farm foreman called me about a 2020 Grand Cherokee. The ranch ran on that vehicle every day, and one morning the fob stopped being recognized.
The dash threw up a key-not-detected warning and the push-button start would not respond. He tried the backup procedure to get it running with a dead fob and it worked once, then stopped. He knew something was actually wrong.

When I got there he met me at the gate, a little skeptical that the job could actually happen in a field. I pulled the fob apart on the hood of my van. The battery contact inside had a slight corrosion bloom on it, probably from the temperature swings out there, and the fob had been sitting in direct sun in the cab for two seasons. The battery itself tested low even though it was not dead. That combination can produce exactly the symptoms he described: intermittent recognition, then nothing.
I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested all five buttons. Fob came back immediately. Then I wanted to verify the vehicle was not also holding a fault from the repeated failed attempts, so I checked the system through the gateway and cleared it.
He stood there and watched the whole thing. I think he expected it to take most of the afternoon. It took about forty minutes, including the drive back down his access road to confirm range at the gate.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that would have also required getting the Jeep there and back. Mobile service out here is not a premium option. For a working ranch in Ramona, it is just the only thing that makes sense.
