1996 Nissan Altima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a car this old?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right key blank for your 1996 Altima and lock you in on a price over the phone. When I arrive, I either use your existing key as a reference or decode the lock directly to pull the cut. I cut the key on site, test it in both the door and the ignition, and hand it to you. No second visit, no waiting room, no tow truck.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership. Registration works fine. I pull the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb to verify the key specs before I cut anything. That's the whole list.

Q: My 1996 Altima key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes feels like it's going to stick. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, and on a car this age it's worth checking both. A worn key that's been copied a generation or two down the line can have a slightly drifted cut, which puts stress on the ignition wafers every time you turn it. Over time those wafers wear down or one can jam. If the original key turns smoothly but a copy binds, the copy is the problem. If both bind, the cylinder itself is worn.

Q: I only have one key for my 1996 Altima. What happens if I lose it?

On a vehicle this generation, an all-keys-lost situation is still very workable. I can decode the lock cylinder to determine the correct cut without needing an existing key. No tow required. Getting a spare made now, before that single key disappears, is the easier and less stressful version of this conversation.

1996 Nissan Altima Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A young couple in San Ysidro Village had just picked up a used 1996 Nissan Altima from an overflow lot. Clean car, decent price, one key. The lot told them to sort out a spare on their own, so they figured it was a quick hardware store run.

Then a friend told them Nissan keys are all chipped now and need a dealer. They weren't sure what year that started, so they called the dealer anyway. The quote they got back stopped them cold. They found EZ Car Keyz online and called to ask if the price was real.

I told them to take a breath. The 1996 Altima predates the chip era for this model. What they needed was a metal key cut to their car, full stop.

I met them at the lot. Decoded the lock, matched the blank, cut it on site. Tested it in the door and the ignition. Both worked clean. They drove home with a spare key and didn't need a tow, a waiting room, or a fraction of what the dealer had quoted them for something they didn't even need.

The look on their faces when I explained what the job actually was might have been worth more than the job itself.

Nissan Altima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1996 Nissan Altima somewhere for key replacement?▼

Not at all. EZ Car Keyz is fully mobile and comes to you in San Ysidro, including the San Ysidro Village area. The 1996 Altima takes a standard metal key, so there's no diagnostic port connection, no dealer system access, and no reason to tow anything anywhere. I show up, decode or match the cut, and hand you a working key right next to your car.
