I was parked near the car wash vacuum area off to the side of the lot in Fire Mountain when she walked up carrying a grooming apron and a look that said she had already heard too many opinions about her key situation.
She had a 2012 Nissan Altima and one working Intelligent Key fob. The second fob had stopped being recognized a few weeks back, she wasn't sure exactly when, and she had been ignoring it. Then the primary fob started acting up, short range, inconsistent door response, and that morning she got the key-not-detected warning while trying to leave a client's house. I checked the battery in the primary fob first. CR2032, original from the look of it, reading low. Swapped it. Range came back immediately, and the door response cleaned up. That part took about two minutes.
The second fob was a different story. Battery was actually fine, but re-registration was needed. I connected to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer, and re-enrolled both fobs so the car recognized them properly. Tested every button on both. Tested the start. Tested the door handles. Everything confirmed before I packed up.
She was back to having two working keys, done at the car wash lot, without an appointment, without a tow, and for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted just for the programming visit.
The car doesn't know whether it was done at a dealership or a parking lot. The security handshake is the same either way.
