2022 Nissan Altima Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was already packed up from a morning job near the RB Town Center when a smog shop off Bernardo Center Drive called me. A customer's 2022 Altima was sitting in their lot, and the situation was worse than a standard key replacement.
A previous locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost procedure on the car. Somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence, the car battery sagged and the power dropped. The immobilizer went into a fault state. The tech left. The customer was standing there with a car that wouldn't start and a module that was now actively fighting any new programming attempt.
I got there and did one thing before touching any software: I clamped my jump pack to the battery and brought the voltage up to a stable level. Power interruption mid-security-handshake is what caused the whole mess, so running another sequence with a weak battery would have just repeated the failure. Once I had stable power, I cleared the fault state through the OBD port with my diagnostic equipment, confirmed the module was ready to accept a new key, then ran the programming sequence clean from the beginning.
The new fob registered on the first attempt. No drama after that.
Total time was close to an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal Altima key job. The extra time was entirely recovery from the first tech's incomplete attempt. I walked the smog shop through what happened so they would recognize it if it came up again. The customer saved a solid chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged, and that was after the extra recovery work.
I carry backup power and backup tools specifically because jobs like this exist.
