I got a call from a smog shop in Downtown Ramona. Not from the car's owner, from the shop itself. That told me something had already gone sideways.

I walked the smog shop tech through what had happened so they would recognize it if they saw it again. Power stability during programming is not optional on these. It is the job.
The whole thing took around an hour and a half, which is longer than a standard key replacement. The previous failed attempt added real time to my day. But the owner paid a fraction of what a dealer tow and dealer replacement would have run, and he drove himself out of that smog shop parking lot.
