Out in San Luis Rey, a guy had parked his 2006 Altima for a long weekend while he flew out for a consulting trip. Came back Tuesday, rolled his luggage out to the lot, clicked the fob. Nothing. Clicked again. Still nothing. The doors were locked, and he stood there for a second realizing the emergency blade was zipped inside his laptop bag, which was in the trunk, which also would not pop without a working fob button.
He called the dealer first. Earliest opening they could get him in was Thursday. Two days away. He called a tow company next and they gave him a number he did not like. Then he found me.
I got to him inside an hour. Unlocked the door mechanically and we got to work. Pulled the battery out of the fob housing and the cell was completely flat. Swapped in a fresh CR1616, put it back together, tested the buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk pop, all four buttons live again.
The key itself was still registered to the car. Nothing had dropped out of the immobilizer memory. The transponder was fine the whole time. He did not need a reprogram. He needed a two-dollar battery installed correctly by someone who showed up.
I gave him a spare CR1616 to keep in the console. He made his next flight connection with time to spare. The dealer slot he booked out of panic was still sitting on the calendar for Thursday.
