What if I need a Nissan key after hours or on the weekend?

Most Nissan dealer service departments shut down by five on weekdays and go dark on Sundays. Lose your key on a Saturday night or a holiday and you are waiting until Monday at the earliest, then waiting again for an open appointment slot.

How long does programming actually take once you're at my car?

On a 2009 Altima Intelligent Key where you already have a working key and just need to add a spare, the programming portion itself runs about 15 to 20 minutes once I'm connected.

All-keys-lost is longer. On this generation Altima, losing every key means the immobilizer has to be reset and the new fob registered from scratch. That process has a timed sequence built into it and can run 30 to 45 minutes at the vehicle. Add cutting the emergency blade insert and doing a full button and door handle check, and you're looking at under an hour total.

Either way, there's no waiting room, no queue, no one pulling your car into a bay when they get to it. The clock starts when I arrive.

Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

The programming hardware does the same job either way -- that part isn't faster or slower based on who holds the tool. What's different is everything around it.

At the dealer you're booking an appointment, waiting for a certified tech, waiting on parts if they don't stock the fob, and sitting in a waiting room while your car is in a queue behind other jobs. One Altima owner documented waiting over six hours at a dealer for a job the tech finished in under fifteen minutes once the car was actually in the bay.

My 2009 Altima starts fine but the push-button won't work unless I hold the fob right up against it. What's going on?

That's a known behavior on this generation's Intelligent Key system, and it's usually telling you one of two things.

First and most common: the fob battery is low. The CR2032 doesn't need to be fully dead to cause this. Once voltage drops below a certain threshold, the fob loses normal operating range but the backup inductive reader built into the start button can still pick it up at close contact. Swap the battery first.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, the antenna or the Intelligent Key receiver inside the cabin may be weak or the fob may have partially dropped out of the vehicle's key memory. That's when you need a diagnostic connection to check the module and re-register the fob properly. But nine times out of ten on these, it's just the battery running low before the fob gives you any other warning.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2009 Altima. Can I program it myself?

Accepted Answer

No. The Intelligent Key system on this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that works for this type of key. That kind of self-programming only applies to older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder -- different system entirely.

The fob you bought online is likely a valid shell and can absolutely be used, but it still has to be paired to your car through the OBD port. Bring the fob with you when you call. We can register it on site in Fernbrook and you won't have paid full price for a brand-new fob you didn't need.
