It was July, a parking lot off Community Road in South Poway, and the guy had groceries in the trunk. Frozen stuff. He figured he had maybe 30 minutes before it turned into a warm, expensive mess.
His Intelligent Key had gone completely dark inside the store. No lock, no unlock, no response at all. He tried the backup start hold against the button and nothing happened. He called the dealer first. Next available appointment was the following morning. Then he called me.

When I got there he was standing next to the car, watching it like it might change its mind. I got the door open mechanically and took a look at the fob. The CR2032 was fully dead, which explained everything on the surface. But when I seated a fresh cell and ran the backup start test again, still nothing. That told me the battery was not the whole story.
I opened the fob. The internal antenna contact had visible corrosion, the kind that builds up slowly and then one day just kills the near-field signal entirely. The backup start relies on that short-range antenna, so a corroded contact will fail that test every time regardless of battery condition.
I replaced the fob with a fresh unit, programmed it through the OBD port, and walked every function: door lock, unlock, trunk release, remote start range, and the backup start hold against the button. Everything confirmed.
From his first phone call to the engine running was 38 minutes. The dealer would have been the next morning. The frozen groceries made it home.
