The transponder reader, the ring around the ignition cylinder, can also fail or develop a weak signal over time on a car this age. And if someone had a non-chipped copy made at some point and that became the primary key in use, it would do exactly this.

If your original key used to work and now triggers that stall pattern, bring it to me before assuming you need a full replacement. Sometimes it is the key, sometimes it is the reader. I diagnose both on site.

Can I buy a key blank online and have you program it, or does it have to be a specific blank you supply?

It depends on the blank. The 2000 Altima uses a specific transponder chip type, and not every aftermarket blank sold online carries the right chip, even if the blade profile looks correct. I have seen blanks listed for this vehicle that fit the keyway but carry the wrong chip entirely, which means the car will never accept them no matter how good the programming equipment is.
