Second, ask them what kind of equipment they use for Nissan smart key programming. They don't have to recite a spec sheet, but they should be able to answer without fumbling. If they go quiet or pivot, move on.

Third, search their business name. No real address, no reviews, a stock photo and a phone number -- those are red flags that show up constantly in Nissan owner forums when people post about bad locksmith experiences. A legitimate mobile locksmith has a verifiable presence, not just a Google ad.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

The fob your 2016 Altima uses is not a key you duplicate at a hardware store. It has a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system. The car checks for that chip's signal before it allows the engine to start. No registered signal, no start.

It also has an emergency metal blade folded inside the fob body. If the fob battery dies completely, that blade lets you get into the door mechanically. But getting in and getting the car to start are two different things -- the immobilizer still needs to see a valid registered fob nearby.

Programming a replacement means connecting to the vehicle's diagnostic port, retrieving the PIN for that specific car, and enrolling the new fob during an open session. That's not a DIY procedure. It requires professional equipment and someone who knows this system specifically.

Probably not the fob. If the car starts and the other door handle still triggers unlock, the fob is being read correctly. Touch unlock on a single door going out while everything else works is almost always a door-side issue -- the capacitive sensor in the handle or the wiring to it, not the key.

Wipe down the handle area and retest. These sensors can get thrown off by moisture, dirt buildup, or even a very thin film from detailing products. If it stays dead on that one door only, you're diagnosing the handle or that door's wiring, not replacing a fob.
