1997 Nissan Altima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does a 1997 Altima need to go to the dealer for a key replacement?

Not at all. This is a mechanical key. There's no module to connect to, no dealer-only procedure standing between you and a working key. A dealer will still want the car brought in, charge you for their time and overhead, and hand you back something that took ten minutes to cut. A mobile locksmith handles the same job at your location. The only thing you need is proof of ownership and a valid ID, which we verify on site.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, your registration or title. We confirm the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your Altima before we cut anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on the spot in a few minutes instead of in a service bay.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and gritty. Is this a key problem or an ignition problem?

On a 1997 Altima, that stiff, gritty feeling when you turn the key is almost always the ignition cylinder wearing out, not the key itself. These cylinders are closing in on 30 years old at this point, and the wafers inside wear down over time. What happens is the worn cylinder starts chewing up the key too, so both end up in rough shape.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN alone if I don't have the original?

Yes. For a 1997 Altima, the key code can be retrieved through a locksmith database using the VIN, or we can decode the lock directly on site. Either way gets us the cut spec we need. You don't have to have the original key present. Bring your ID and registration and we can work from there.

1997 Nissan Altima Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman running a home daycare out of a bungalow near Downtown Santee called me on a weeknight. Her 1997 Nissan Altima had a key that was barely hanging together.

The bow had split near the blade, and she was wrapping it in tape to keep it in one piece. She'd already been to the dealer, who told her she needed a full new key cut. She didn't push back because she had no reason to. That's just what they do.

What nobody told her was that a worn or cracked key blank on a 1997 Altima is a cutting job, not a programming job. I pulled up to her house that evening with my decoding tools and a set of key blanks.

I decoded the lock to get the cut spec, cut the new key right there on the van, and tested it in the ignition and the door. Turned clean on the first try. She watched the whole thing from her front steps, which I think helped, because she'd expected it to be a bigger ordeal.

She mentioned offhand that the dealer quoted her a number that didn't add up for what she actually needed. That happens a lot with older vehicles. The assumption is always that there's more to it. Sometimes there isn't.
