Out in Berry Park in Imperial Beach, I met a guy in a parking lot who had been fighting his 2001 Altima for about three weeks.
He had one key left, and it was getting hard to turn. Not stuck, just resistant. The kind of thing where you start being careful with it, then overly careful, then you stop parking anywhere inconvenient because you are half afraid the key will not come back out. He had already called the Nissan dealer. They quoted him for a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and the programming time to go with it. He was ready to book it.
His neighbor told him to call a locksmith first.
I looked at the cylinder and the issue was worn internal wafers, not a failed cylinder. The cylinder itself still had life in it. I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Before I touched anything mechanical, I read the immobilizer data so I had a backup and could get the new key programmed correctly to the security system. Then I did the programming on site.
He watched the whole thing from the curb. When the engine turned over clean on the first try, he just nodded like he had known all along it was going to be fine.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and he kept a cylinder that had nothing actually wrong with it.
