Out in The Crosby, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 1998 Forester on a worn-down key for longer than he should have. The cuts were so shallow the key was starting to slip in the door lock. He had already been to a hardware store twice. Both copies they made were worse than the original.
He found me after the second bad copy. I pulled up, decoded the lock cylinder directly, and cut a key to match what the lock actually wanted - not what the worn original looked like. That distinction matters. A copy of a worn key is just a worse key. Reading the lock itself gets you back to spec.
