2021 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2021 Forester?

The programming does not expire or degrade. Once a key is registered to the vehicle, it stays registered until it is deliberately erased, which only happens during an all-keys-lost reset. The battery in the fob is what needs periodic attention, typically every one to three years depending on use. The shell and buttons are the other wear point.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. We stand behind the work. That said, when a freshly programmed Forester smart key starts acting up after a few weeks, the fob itself is rarely the problem. The more common pattern owners report is an intermittent key-not-detected warning where the car powers up but hesitates or refuses to crank, then clears on its own after sitting a few minutes. That points toward something in the vehicle security system or a communication hiccup, not a bad key.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2021 Forester. Can you still make a replacement, or does it have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on the 2021 Forester is a job we handle on site. It takes longer than an add-a-key because the process involves resetting the vehicle's key memory entirely before registering any new fob, and there is a timed sequence built into that reset that you cannot rush. Plan for the appointment to run longer than a standard spare-key visit. Bring your VIN, your ID showing ownership, and your registration. Having all of that ready when I arrive keeps things moving.

Q: My Forester shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What else could cause that?

A few things. The most common one forum owners bring up is proximity: the 2021 Forester's system tends to want the fob closer to the door handle or start button than some other brands do. If you are reaching in from an awkward angle or the fob is deep in a bag, it can drop the signal.

2021 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was coming up from the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove when she called. The 2021 Forester was sitting in the parking lot of a strip mall, her yoga studio twenty feet away. She had a class starting in forty minutes and one working key in her hand.

She wanted a spare. Had the VIN ready, had her ID, knew exactly what she was asking for. That kind of preparation matters more than people realize.

I already had the right blank in the van. The 2021 Forester uses a four-button smart key, and with her working fob present, this was an add-a-key job, always cleaner and faster than starting from scratch with no keys at all. I connected to the diagnostic port, pulled up the vehicle security system, and registered the new fob alongside her original. Both tested out on all four buttons. The door handles responded. The ignition recognized it. I handed it to her with about twenty-five minutes to spare before her class.

She did mention the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days, parts on order, plus labor. She found me instead and got it done in the parking lot before lunch.

That's most of these jobs. Someone just needs a working spare and doesn't want to leave their car at a dealership for a week.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2021 Subaru Forester?▼

We use verified blanks that match the factory FCC ID and are confirmed compatible with the 2021 Forester's vehicle security system. On this generation of Subaru smart key, the vehicle is particular about what it will accept during programming. Some aftermarket fobs that look identical on the outside have caused pairing failures, where the tool connects fine but the car refuses to register the new key.
