2015 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2015 Forester?

The programming doesn't expire or degrade. Once a fob is registered to your vehicle, it stays registered until something actively removes it, like an all-keys-lost reset or a dealer clearing the key memory. What does wear out is the physical fob. The buttons, the shell, the battery contact clips. A CR1632 in a 2015 Forester fob typically runs one to three years depending on how often the car detects the fob passively throughout the day.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. Everything I program is covered. That said, when a properly registered fob on a 2015 Forester goes flaky after the fact, the fob usually isn't the problem. Owners on Subaru forums have reported situations where the car intermittently fails to detect the key, shows a warning on the dash, and then clears itself after a few minutes with no fob change.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2015 Forester. Can you still make a new one, or does it have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on a 2015 Forester is a standard job. It does not have to go to the dealer. The process requires diagnostic equipment to access the immobilizer, clear the existing key memory, and register the new fob from scratch. There's no ignition-turn sequence or onboard trick for smart key enrollment on this system. It needs proper tools. But that's exactly what I carry in the van.

Q: The engine cranks fine with my 2015 Forester key but dies right after. Is that the smart key or something else?

That specific pattern, starts then immediately stalls, points toward the immobilizer not completing its handshake, not a dead fob battery. A dead battery would usually prevent the start attempt altogether. A few things can cause this. If a replacement fob wasn't fully registered during programming, the car reads enough signal to crank but the immobilizer cuts fuel once it can't confirm authorization.

2015 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already running a Saturday night in East Lemon Grove when the call came in. Couple at a restaurant, 2015 Subaru Forester, parked and not going anywhere.

They came out after dinner and the fob wouldn't unlock the doors. No response at all. They tried the door handle touch sensor, nothing. Neither of them knew the emergency blade existed inside the fob body, so they figured the car was just dead and they'd deal with it Monday. They were mentally already calling an Uber.

I pulled up with the right fob stock already in the van, popped the release on their existing fob right there under the parking lot lights. CR1632 was reading low and sitting a little loose in the clip. Swapped it, reseated the contact, and the fob lit right back up. Doors responded, touch sensor on the handle came back, everything talking again.

Ran a quick function check on all four buttons before I packed up. Lock, unlock, the whole sequence. Car started on the first push.

They hadn't lost programming. The battery had just given out enough to drop below the threshold the system needed. Whole thing was under twenty minutes. They drove home that night instead of leaving the Forester in a lot until Monday morning.

The dealer would have been a different conversation: a tow, a wait for a Monday appointment, and a number that wasn't going to be small. That part didn't even come up. They were just glad to be home.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2015 Subaru Forester?▼

Depends on the job, and I'll tell you exactly what I'm using before I do anything. For the 2015 Forester smart key, the fob body needs to carry the right transponder element and broadcast on the correct frequency so the immobilizer and the keyless system both accept it. Quality aftermarket fobs built to OEM specification work reliably on these when they're sourced from a reputable supplier.
