2006 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the whole job take once you're at my car?

For a 2006 Forester where you still have a working key and just need a spare, the programming portion is quick once we're connected, typically under twenty minutes on-car. The decoding and cutting adds a little time, but the whole job is usually done in a single visit well under an hour. All-keys-lost takes longer. On this generation, there's a mandatory wait period built into the immobilizer reset before new keys can be registered. It's not something you skip.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a significant margin, yes, and I come to you instead of the other way around. Dealers on older Subaru models sometimes need to order blanks, schedule a programming appointment separately from the cut, or in all-keys-lost situations, involve additional steps that stretch the turnaround to days.

Q: My 2006 Forester cranks but dies right away. Is that the immobilizer?

That's the classic symptom. Cranks, fires briefly, then shuts off in under two seconds. The engine management system checks the transponder chip in the key at startup. If it doesn't get the right signal back, it cuts fuel or ignition almost immediately.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it, or is that not how it works?

Depends on what you bought. A lot of blanks sold online for this era of Subaru come without a chip, or with a chip that isn't compatible with the vehicle's immobilizer. The blade might look identical and cut perfectly, and the key still won't start the car. Bring it and I'll check it. If the chip is correct and unprogrammed, it can likely be used. If it's the wrong type or missing entirely, you need a proper blank.

2006 Subaru Forester Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach called on a Saturday morning. Graphic novelist, works from home, parks on one of those steep narrow residential streets where even a compact car has to think twice about the turn.

His Forester had been sitting there for two days because his only key had stopped working. He'd already called the dealer. They told him the car needed to come in first, and that was the end of that conversation, because without a working key the car wasn't going anywhere.

I parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up with my gear.

The key blank, the cutting machine, and the programming equipment all stayed in the van. I decoded what I needed from the door lock on the spot, walked back down, cut the blade, programmed the transponder chip, and walked back up. The car started on the first try.

He hadn't moved the Forester in two days. It was gone in about forty minutes from when I arrived.

The dealer comparison came up after, almost as a footnote. He'd already been quoted a number that assumed towing was his problem to solve. It wasn't mine. I just walked up a hill.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Subaru key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Subaru dealer service departments run limited hours and most are closed Sunday entirely. If your only key quits on a Friday evening near the bay, Monday is the earliest appointment, and only if they stock the right blank and can fit you in. We work nights and weekends. That is not a selling point, it is how mobile locksmith work functions, because key emergencies do not happen at 10am on a Tuesday.
