2017 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near the Mission San Luis Rey Area flagged me down on a Tuesday morning, which was a first. He was parked in a lot off Pala Road, standing outside his 2017 Subaru Forester with his fob in one hand and his phone in the other, already halfway through a search for a dealer's number.
His story was simple. The fob had been acting up for a week: slow to respond, had to stand close to the door. That morning it stopped unlocking the car entirely, and then the push-button start gave him a key-not-detected warning. He had gotten in using the mechanical insert blade but couldn't start the car.
I asked when he last changed the battery. He couldn't remember. I told him that was probably the whole story.
Opened the fob right there on the hood. The CR2032 was original, judging by how corroded the positive face looked. Swapped it out, reseated everything, and handed it back to him. He touched the door handle and it unlocked immediately.
We still tested everything before I called it done. Lock, unlock, the handle sensor on both front doors, and the push-button start. Every function came back clean.
He asked what he owed me. I told him less than he was about to spend waiting at the dealer for a diagnostic appointment. He laughed and said he felt like an idiot. I told him the same battery issue has sent people to the dealer for a full fob replacement more times than I can count. Nothing to feel bad about.
