I got a call from an alignment shop off Otay Mesa Road, over in the Nestor area. The owner of a 2018 Forester was already having a rough day before I showed up.
Another locksmith had attempted a smart key replacement on his car. Somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence, the vehicle battery voltage dropped. The immobilizer module didn't finish its handshake cleanly. It locked up. The other locksmith packed his tools and left without a word.
The alignment shop guys didn't know what to tell him. They called me.
When I got there, the car wouldn't recognize any key. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning and the engine wouldn't crank. It wasn't bricked, but it was close to the edge of what an OBD-only approach could recover.
First thing I did was clamp my jump pack to the battery to hold a stable voltage. A second voltage drop mid-sequence would have made this significantly worse. Then I cleared the fault state the immobilizer had stored up before I touched anything key-related. You have to give the module a clean slate or the new programming attempt inherits the same problem.
Once the fault cleared and the system came back to a normal ready state, I ran the programming sequence through the OBD port. The new fob paired on the first attempt. Walked every function: door handles, start button, lock, unlock, the whole thing.
He'd been at that shop for three hours already waiting. I was done in about ninety minutes. He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to think about the flatbed fee alone, the two-to-three day wait, and then whatever the service counter adds on top. He stopped doing the math out loud and just said thanks.
