Out near Brown Field Area, a guy flagged me down through a text late on a weekday morning. He was in a parking lot, 2024 Forester, and his fob had gone completely dark overnight. No door response, no start, nothing. He had already bought a CR2032 from a nearby parts store and swapped it himself, and it made zero difference. He figured he needed a whole new fob.
When I got there, I popped the fob open on the hood so he could see what I was doing. The new battery he had put in was sitting slightly canted. The positive face wasn't making full contact with the clip. Looked fine to the eye, but it wasn't seated flat. I straightened the contact tab just slightly, reseated the same battery he bought, clicked it shut.
Fob lit up immediately. Both door handles responded on the first touch. Start button saw the key right away.
He laughed and said he'd been texting family about buying a new key. I told him it happens more than people think, and that a slightly bent contact tab reads the same as a dead battery from the outside.
I still walked the whole fob before I left. All four buttons, both handles, start function, verified. If there had been a real programming issue on top of it, I would have caught it right there. He didn't need anything replaced. Just the right small fix, done on site.
