1999 Subaru Forester
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a car this old?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I show up with the right blank and cutting equipment. For the 1999 Forester, the process is mechanical: I decode the existing key or read the lock cylinder to get the correct cut, then cut a new key to match. No programming sequence, no diagnostic port, no wait for codes. I test it in the door and ignition before I hand it to you.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, typically your registration or title. I pull the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb to confirm key specs. That's the whole list. Keep the car accessible and unlocked if possible, since it makes cylinder access faster, but I can work around a locked car too.

Q: I have the original key but it's worn down and hard to turn. Can you make a fresh copy that actually works right?

Yes, and this comes up a lot on Foresters this age. A worn key has rounded-down cuts that still technically work but put extra stress on the tumblers every time you use it. Copying a worn key directly just duplicates the problem, sometimes makes it worse. What I do instead is decode the lock cylinder itself to get the original factory cut values, then cut the new key to those specs rather than tracing the worn original.

Q: I lost my only key for a 1999 Forester. Is all-keys-lost a big deal on a car this old?

On a 1999 Forester with a mechanical key, all-keys-lost is not the ordeal it becomes on newer vehicles. There's no stored key memory to wipe, no timed relearn sequence to sit through. I decode the lock cylinder directly to pull the correct cut, make the key, and you're back on the road. It's the same basic process whether you have the original in hand or not. Bring your ID and proof of ownership and we're good to go.

1999 Subaru Forester Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A teacher in North Park had just picked up a 1999 Subaru Forester from an auction lot. Clean body, good engine, one key. She called the Subaru dealer to ask about a spare and they quoted her a price she wasn't expecting on a car this age. She found EZ Car Keyz online and called to ask if that number was real.

I told her it was real, and that I could do the same job for a fraction of that.

She was still at the lot when I got there, hadn't even driven it home yet. I pulled the cut from her existing key, verified it against the door lock cylinder, and cut a fresh blade to match. Two minutes of testing: key in the door, key in the ignition. Both worked clean.

She drove home from that lot with two working keys. The whole thing happened in the parking lot before she even made it to the freeway.

What stuck with me was the look she had when I handed her the spare. Not surprise, just relief. She'd bought the car that morning and by noon she wasn't flying without a net anymore.

Subaru Forester Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1999 Subaru Forester somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the car is, whether that's your driveway off 30th Street, a parking lot, or your job. For a mechanical key like the one on a 1999 Forester, there's no module to plug into, no tow required, and no waiting room. I cut the key on site and you're done. The dealer wants the car in their service bay, but there's no technical reason you can't have this done right where the car is parked.
