2019 Subaru Forester Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over near the Lake Poway Area, a guy called me on a weekday afternoon with a pretty tight window. His shift started in under an hour and his 2019 Forester wasn't responding to the fob at all. Push-button start was showing a key-not-detected warning, the door handle touch unlock wasn't triggering, nothing. He'd already swapped the CR2032 himself and it didn't change anything.
That last detail told me something. A battery swap that doesn't fix it usually means one of two things: either the new cell didn't seat cleanly against the contacts, or there's a pairing issue that needs to be resolved through the OBD port.
I got to the lot in about 20 minutes. First thing I did was open the fob and check the battery contact points myself. The cell he'd put in was fine, but one of the contact clips had a slight inward bow from the way it got pried open. Not much, just enough to break a reliable connection under vibration. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and tested range before even touching the OBD port.
That alone brought back the door handle response and the push-button start. I still connected through the diagnostic port to verify the key registration was reading clean and no faults were stored. Everything looked right.
He made his shift. The whole job was closer to 25 minutes and cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted to charge just for the diagnostic appointment. I didn't even need to cut anything.
