I got a call from a woman in Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside, on a Tuesday morning. She was standing outside a yoga studio, her 2014 Forester sitting in the parking lot with the hazards going. I seated a correct CR1632, made sure the contact clips had good tension, closed the fob, and had her try it herself. Engine started on the first press. No reprogramming, no diagnostic port, no drama.
We spent the last five minutes walking every button and the door handle detection to confirm it was all working. She had been about to call the dealer, which would have meant a tow and a wait.
Turned out to be a ten-dollar battery and knowing exactly what to look for.
