I got a call from a woman in Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside, on a Tuesday morning. She was standing outside a yoga studio, her 2014 Forester sitting in the parking lot with the hazards going.
She had managed to get inside the car using the mechanical insert key hidden in the fob, but the push-button wouldn't wake up, and every time she tried, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and nothing happened.
She had already done the obvious thing: drove to a pharmacy, bought a battery, swapped it in the parking lot. The fob seemed to work, the doors locked and unlocked, but the car still wouldn't start.
When I pulled up, she handed me the fob. I opened it and found the problem immediately. The replacement battery she had installed was the right diameter but wrong thickness. It was sitting slightly proud of the contacts, which meant it was making intermittent contact, enough to fire the lock and unlock buttons but not enough to sustain the handshake the immobilizer needs to release and let the engine run.
I seated a correct CR1632, made sure the contact clips had good tension, closed the fob, and had her try it herself. Engine started on the first press. No reprogramming, no diagnostic port, no drama.
We spent the last five minutes walking every button and the door handle detection to confirm it was all working. She had been about to call the dealer, which would have meant a tow and a wait.
Turned out to be a ten-dollar battery and knowing exactly what to look for.
