It was a July afternoon in South Oceanside, and she had a full Costco run sitting in the cargo area of her 2023 Forester. Frozen stuff. The kind of haul that doesn't survive an hour in a locked car in that heat.
Her fob stopped responding in the parking lot. She pressed lock, unlock, nothing. The car was shut tight. She called the dealer and they told her the next available appointment was the following day. Then she called me. I was about 20 minutes away.
When I got there, the first thing I did was pop the fob and check the CR2032. It was reading low, borderline dead. Swapped it out. The fob woke up partially, but the vehicle still wasn't pairing correctly at the door handle and the immobilizer wasn't seeing it clean. Turned out the battery had gone fully flat at some point recently, which on these Foresters can cause the fob to fall out of registration with the vehicle's security system. A fresh cell gets the remote functions moving but doesn't automatically fix the sync.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the key registration menu, and re-enrolled the fob. Walked all four doors, tested the handle touch unlock on both sides, ran every button. Engine started clean, no warning on the dash, immobilizer happy.
From her call to her driving away with intact frozen food was just over 40 minutes. The dealer would have been the next day, and their quote was a good chunk more than what she paid me. She just seemed relieved. Didn't say much. Grabbed her groceries and went home.
