When a 2002 Subaru Forester key is done wrong, it doesn't "kind of work." It fails. The engine might crank but not start. The remote might lock but not unlock. Push-to-start might work for a week then randomly refuse to detect the fob.
A handyman at the home improvement store lot in El Cajon had a key from another locksmith for his Forester that stopped working after about eight days. It would start in the morning, then by evening push-to-start would flash "key not detected." He thought the car had an electrical problem, but it didn't.
The other locksmith had used the wrong transponder chip. His Forester needs a specific chip generation to communicate with Subaru's immobilizer. A close-but-wrong chip can pass initial programming but fail after deeper security checks. I used my VVDI2 to read what chip was in the bad key, confirmed it was wrong, and programmed a new key with the correct chip. His fob, FCC ID NHVWB1U711, also had a weak CR2025 or CR2032 battery making detection worse.
The replacement has been working for months and cost him $99. Dealer would have charged $211. The difference is the chip inside.
