There's a farmers market lot near the Torrey Pines area of Del Mar that fills up on weekends. An organic produce vendor called me from that lot on a Saturday evening. Her 2001 Subaru Forester started fine, but the fob had been dead for weeks and she'd just gotten around to dealing with it. She'd swapped the battery herself a couple months back, and it worked briefly, then quit again.
She'd called the dealer first. They told her to bring it in, that they'd need to order the fob by VIN and schedule a separate programming appointment. She was already looking at the better part of a week before she'd have a working remote again.
I got there while she was still breaking down her display table. The fob battery was a CR2032 someone had swapped in at some point. Close but not right. The contacts had a slight bow to them from the oversized cell sitting in there.
I replaced the battery with the correct CR2025, reseated the contacts, and tested the buttons. Nothing. At that point the fob needed to be reprogrammed to the car, which is exactly what I was there for. Ran the programming sequence through the OBD port with my equipment, walked all four buttons, confirmed the locks were responding cleanly, and tested range across the parking lot.
She had a fully working fob before the last of the foot traffic cleared out. The dealer appointment never happened. She saved a good chunk compared to what they were going to charge, and she didn't lose a week of her schedule waiting for it.
