In the Brown Field Area of Otay Mesa, a woman had her only key to her 2003 Tacoma give out in the worst possible way. The plastic housing cracked first, then the blade snapped clean inside the door lock. She was standing in the parking lot holding the fob half in one hand and nothing useful in the other.

When I got there, the first order of business was the blade fragment stuck in the lock. Got that out without damaging the cylinder. Then I decoded the lock so I could cut a fresh blade. The fob itself, the shell, was gone, but the circuit board and the transponder chip inside were intact. That matters a lot on a job like this.

Because she still had the original chip, I did not need to do an all-keys-lost reset. I read the transponder data from the damaged key, rebuilt her original fob components into a new shell, and cut two replacement key blades. Tested both. Truck started, remote worked, doors locked and unlocked.

She went from zero keys to two working keys in right around 40 minutes. If she had tossed that cracked fob before calling, the job gets longer and costs more. The chip inside a broken housing is almost always still good. Hang onto the pieces.
