I got a call on a Sunday afternoon from a guy parked off 30th Street in North Park. He had been in San Diego for the weekend and his remote head key had quit responding entirely. No lock, no unlock, the buttons were dead. He could still get in with the fold-out blade and turn the ignition, but the remote functions were gone and he was convinced the transponder had also failed because he kept reading things online that scared him into thinking the whole key was toast.

The transponder had never been the problem. The truck had been starting fine the whole time because the immobilizer side of things was still reading the chip even with the marginal battery contact, but the remote radio signal needs a cleaner draw and it was the first thing to drop out.

He had already looked up dealer availability. They were booked out until Tuesday and the estimate he had been given over the phone assumed a full key replacement. He did not need a new key at all. He needed the right battery seated correctly, checked on site, in about four minutes.

That is the job sometimes. Not every Tacoma call turns into a programming run. Knowing what to rule out first is what saves people time and money.
