Out near Lake Poway Area, I got a call from a woman who had been dealing with a frustrating ignition on her 2010 Toyota Tacoma for a few weeks. Some mornings it turned clean. Other mornings she was sitting in the parking lot coaxing it, wiggling the key, waiting for it to decide to cooperate. She had already been to the dealer. I decoded the existing cylinder, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Before doing any of that, I backed up the vehicle security data as a precaution so I had a known good state to return to if anything moved unexpectedly during the mechanical work. After the cylinder was sorted, I synced her remote back up so all three buttons were working again.
The ignition turned smooth on the first try. She looked at it like she was waiting for it to betray her again. It did not.
The dealer's quote would have replaced parts that had nothing wrong with them. I replaced the wafers that actually failed. That is the whole job.
