I got a call from a Tacoma owner over in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. She had been dealing with a cracked fob for a few months, held together with a strip of electrical tape around the midsection.

I transferred the board and transponder into a replacement shell, seated the battery contacts correctly, and snapped the emergency insert key back in. Then I walked every function: door lock, door unlock, the third button, and the push-to-start response. Solid on all of it. Range was normal.

She looked at the fob in her hand and said something like, "That's the same key, just... not falling apart."

That is exactly right. The dealer quote was for parts that were not broken. Sometimes the job is knowing what not to replace.
