2019 Toyota Tacoma
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2019 Toyota Tacoma Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the Casa de Oro area of Spring Valley had just bought a used 2019 Tacoma off a private seller. Good truck, decent price, one key. The seller told him to grab a spare on his own and made it sound like a quick hardware store stop.

He found out fast that's not how it works.

He called the Toyota dealer first. The wait time and the price they quoted stopped him cold. Then he called me and asked if that number was normal. I told him it's normal for a dealer. It's not normal for a locksmith.

I met him at his place in Casa de Oro. His truck was the Smart Key trim, so this was a fob programming job, not just a cut-and-go. I confirmed the existing fob was working, checked that the transponder was communicating cleanly with the vehicle security system, and then registered a second fob through the OBD port using my diagnostic equipment. Cut the emergency insert blade to match his truck. Walked every button. Tested proximity entry on both doors. Everything worked.

The part he appreciated most wasn't the price, though that helped. It was that he didn't have to leave the truck anywhere. He bought a used vehicle with one key in a neighborhood where that's just not a comfortable situation. He drove away with two.

One other thing I mentioned before I left: now that he has two registered fobs, if he ever loses one, it's an add-a-key job. If he'd lost that single key before calling me, it would have been an all-keys-lost reset, which is a longer job and costs more. Having a spare isn't just convenience. It's insurance for the next time.
