A guy over in Seven Oaks picked up a used 2012 Tacoma and got exactly what the seller promised: one key, one fob, good luck. The fob buttons were so worn down you could barely feel them. The blade was cut fine and the transponder worked, but the remote was basically decorative at that point.
He figured a hardware store could knock out a spare. Then he learned hardware stores are not set up for this. The transponder inside the key blank has to be enrolled to that specific truck. Without that, the engine might crank but it will not stay running. He called the dealer. The number they gave him made him pause long enough to call me instead.
I met him in Rancho Bernardo, not far from his place in Seven Oaks. I cut a replacement key blade to his vehicle on my machine, enrolled the transponder through the OBD port, then synced the new remote. Ran through all three buttons, locked and unlocked from across the parking lot, confirmed the transponder was talking to the immobilizer correctly.
The whole thing took less time than the dealer's hold music. He left with two working keys, which matters more than people realize. If he ever loses one now, the next job is an add-a-key. If he had lost that single worn fob before calling me, it would have been an all-keys-lost job, which is a longer process and costs more. One spare key is cheap insurance.
