Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 Toyota Tacoma Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

South Poway on a Tuesday afternoon. A guy called me from the parking area near one of the business parks off Scripps Poway Parkway. He had his key in hand -- truck was sitting right there -- but it wouldn't start. Cranked fine, then died immediately every time. He figured it was a fuel problem and had already called a tow.

I got there before the tow did. The way he described it -- cranks, fires for half a second, then cuts out -- that points one direction on these trucks. The immobilizer sees the key, gets confused about whether it's authorized, and kills the engine before it can run. Not a mechanical problem. A security system problem.

He had two keys. One started the truck without a fight. The other did that half-second stall every single time. So one of his keys had a transponder that was either damaged or had drifted out of the system somehow. He'd been using the bad one for weeks without knowing the good key was on a different ring.

I verified the working key, confirmed it was solid, and reprogrammed the second one on site so he'd have a reliable spare again. No tow needed. He canceled it while I was still there.

The dealer thing came up because he'd gotten a quote a few months back for a spare and just never followed through. Said the number they gave him made him want to think about it a while. He saved a good chunk coming this way, and more importantly he didn't just go buy a replacement fob online and wonder why it wouldn't work.
