2011 Toyota Tacoma
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2011 Toyota Tacoma Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A renter in the Fernbrook area of Ramona called me about a spare key for his 2011 Tacoma. He had one working key and wanted a backup, just in case. He'd called the dealer first and got a quote that stopped him cold. He figured that was just the Toyota tax and started looking for another way.

I told him I could come to him. He seemed surprised by that part more than anything else.

I parked next to his truck in the apartment lot. He had the original key with him, which makes the job cleaner. I decoded the blade profile from the existing key, cut a new blade to match, and got the fob programmed through the OBD port. The transponder in the new key head synced to the truck's immobilizer. Remote functions tested out on all three buttons. Start, lock, unlock, panic. The whole thing ran about 35 minutes.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. Same fob, same transponder, same security handshake. The dealer quote assumed a parts counter, a service writer, a waiting room, and a building lease. I have a van and the same tools. That's the spread, every time.

He asked if he could get a third key made someday. I walked him through the onboard relearn sequence he could run himself if he ever wanted to add another, now that he had two working keys. He pulled up his phone and wrote it down right there in the parking lot.
