Carlton Hills is a neighborhood I know pretty well. Quiet streets, a lot of families, and people who generally have their day planned out before they walk out the door in the morning. So when a schedule falls apart, it falls apart fast.
A mom had dropped her kid off at the elementary school and walked back to her 2023 Tacoma and got nothing. The fob was in her hand, she touched the door handle, and the truck sat there like she was a stranger. No click, no lights, no response from the push-button start once she got inside. Just a warning on the dash telling her it could not detect the key.
She tried the fob again. Then held it closer to the start button the way you do when you already know it probably will not help. Then called the dealer, who was scheduling a week out and suggested she arrange a tow.

I was already in Santee, so I was at the school lot in short order. First thing I did was have her hold the fob directly against the start button, which is the manual override position for when the battery is low or the signal is weak. Truck started. Battery was not dead, but it was low enough that the proximity range had collapsed to almost nothing.
We swapped the CR2450 on site. I keep them stocked because this fob size comes up often enough on Toyotas that running out is not an option. Fresh battery seated, contacts cleaned, and her range came right back. Tested all four buttons, walked the door handles, confirmed the push-button start was reading the fob from a normal distance.
She was back on the road before her parking meter would have expired. The dealer was still on hold music somewhere.
