Worst case on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma is a smart key all-keys-lost where the car had a dead battery or a low-voltage event that scrambled the immobilizer communication. Another locksmith tried programming, the ID box threw errors, and they packed up. Now the car will not accept any key and the system is in a fault state.

A customer's car was at a tire shop in San Ysidro. The tire shop had called another locksmith for a key on his Tacoma. That locksmith got a no-start error after a failed programming attempt and left. The tire shop called me.

I brought my ACDP bench tool. The ACDP reads the smart box or ID box data directly from the chip when OBD communication is locked out by a previous bad attempt. I pulled the module, read the security data, cleared the fault, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. His smart fob, FCC ID HYQ14FBA, was a 3-button proximity key. The system accepted the new fob on the first clean attempt after the reset.

Total was about 90 minutes. His bill was $232. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and $414 or more. I carry the bench tools for exactly these situations where the first locksmith's attempt left the car in worse shape.
