Q: What exactly is a "remote" key and what's inside it?

The 2013 Tacoma uses what's called a remote key, sometimes called a remote head key. It's a single unit: a key blade that cuts into the ignition on one end, and a fob body with buttons on the other. Start with the CR2032. That's the battery inside the fob, and when it gets low, the remote signal drops off well before the transponder stops working. The transponder draws power from the car, not the battery, which is why the truck still starts even when the remote functions quit. Swap the battery first. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, check the battery contacts inside the housing.

2013 Toyota Tacoma Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe on a call that looked like a full key replacement before I even pulled up.

The owner had a 2013 Tacoma and a fob that had clearly been through it. The shell had split along the seam at the top corner, the rubber button pad was wearing through in the middle, and she'd been holding the whole thing together with a rubber band. I had a replacement housing with me. Moved the electronics over, seated the board, pressed in a fresh CR2032, and snapped the new shell together. Then I ran through every button and confirmed the transponder was still reading at the ignition. Cut a fresh blade to match her lock, verified it, done.

She asked what the dealer had been about to charge her to replace parts that weren't actually broken. I told her what I charged was a fraction of that. She just shook her head.

That's the job I like. Not every cracked fob needs to be thrown away.
