2013 Acura ILX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is the smart key on my 2013 Acura ILX?

It's the fob that lets you unlock the doors by touching the handle and start the engine without pulling anything out of your pocket. The factory fob has four buttons, runs on a CR2032, and carries a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer separately from the radio signal that handles lock and unlock. Those are two independent systems in the same housing. There's also an emergency blade folded inside the fob.

Q: My Acura ILX says there's a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Swap the CR2032. That warning is the most common symptom of a low battery on these, and it shows up before the fob is fully dead. If a fresh battery doesn't clear it, try this: hold the fob flat against the start button and press the brake. That backup method uses a short-range signal from the transponder chip directly and bypasses the radio side entirely. It works even when the battery is completely gone.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 ILX. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2013 ILX smart key has no owner-accessible self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick or button combination that registers a new fob on this system. Programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. If you already bought the fob, that's fine, bring it. I can register it on site as long as it's the correct fob for this vehicle. You just still need someone with the right equipment to complete the job.

Q: Can you make a key if I've lost all keys to my 2013 ILX?

Yes, and this comes up more often than people expect. All-keys-lost on the ILX means the vehicle has no registered fobs at all, so the job involves a full security reset, registering at least one new fob through the OBD port, and cutting the emergency blade. The process takes longer than adding a spare because of the reset sequence involved, but it's a single on-site visit.

2013 Acura ILX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Ventura, out near Mussel Shoals, I got a call from a guy who'd bought a 2013 ILX used and never had a second key. He'd been meaning to get a spare made for two years. Then the original fob started acting up and the urgency got real fast.

He wasn't locked out, but the push-button start had gotten flaky. Sometimes it needed two tries. Sometimes the door handle touch unlock didn't respond on the first grab. He assumed the fob was dying and had already ordered a replacement fob online before calling me, which is a reasonable move except that a replacement fob for this car needs to be registered through the OBD port with diagnostic equipment before it does anything useful.

I met him where the car was parked, programmed his new fob to the vehicle, and cut a matching emergency blade on site. While I was there I tested everything: lock, unlock, both door handle touch sensors, push-button start, and each of the four buttons on the fob. The door handle on the driver side was a half-second slow to respond even after programming, which turned out to be a minor contamination issue on the sensor surface. Wiped it down, retested, and it came back to normal.

He got a working spare and a fixed primary, both done before he finished his coffee. The dealer had quoted him a multi-day wait just to get an appointment. That part barely came up. He was already satisfied before I mentioned it.

Acura ILX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out and make a new one?▼

Yep. Broken key extraction on the ILX is a standard call. I use extraction tools to remove the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder. Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the broken piece if it's clean enough, or pull the key data through other means, and cut a new blade on site. One thing worth knowing on these fobs: the housing where the emergency blade folds in is a known weak point.
