My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out and make a new one?

Yep. Broken key extraction on the ILX is a standard call. I use extraction tools to remove the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder. Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the broken piece if it's clean enough, or pull the key data through other means, and cut a new blade on site.

One thing worth knowing on these fobs: the housing where the emergency blade folds in is a known weak point. Years of pocket wear crack the plastic right at the pivot, and once that hinge goes, the blade can snap off during insertion. If that's what happened to you, I can also replace just the outer shell and move your existing internals into a new housing rather than doing a full replacement. Depends on what's actually damaged.

What exactly is the smart key on my 2013 Acura ILX?

That backup method uses a short-range signal from the transponder chip directly and bypasses the radio side entirely. It works even when the battery is completely gone.

If the backup method also fails, the problem is deeper. ILX owners on the forums report that intermittent key-not-detected and repeated start-button failures sometimes persist after a new battery, and that usually points to cracked solder joints or corroded contacts on the fob's internal circuit board rather than anything wrong with the car itself. At that point the fob needs to be opened and inspected, or replaced and reprogrammed. That's where I come in.
