2017 Acura ILX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can I program a replacement smart key myself on a 2017 ILX?

No. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick for this system. The 2017 ILX smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment and proper security access to register a new fob. That's true whether you're adding a spare or starting from zero keys. If you bought a fob online, also confirm the factory FCC ID matches your existing fob before anything else. A fob with the wrong identifier is dead on arrival for programming even if the case looks identical.

Q: How long does a spare key or all-keys-lost job take on a 2017 ILX?

Adding a spare when you still have one working fob is the quicker visit. I'm registering an additional fob, cutting the emergency insert blade, and running a function check. All-keys-lost takes longer because the security system has to go through a full reset sequence with timed steps built into the process, and then everything gets registered from the beginning. Either way, I test at the end: door handle touch sensors on both sides, all buttons, and push-button start behavior.

Q: My 2017 ILX fob works fine for locking and unlocking, but the push-button start is acting up. Are those related?

Not necessarily. The door handle touch functions and the push-button start can behave independently, and a fob that handles lock and unlock well can still struggle with the start function if the battery is getting weak. The start system demands a stronger, more consistent signal from the fob than a simple lock or unlock command does. First move: replace the CR2032 even if the fob feels like it's working.

Q: I bought a used 2017 ILX and it only came with one fob. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I actually need it?

Get it made now. All-keys-lost on this system is a longer, more involved job than a spare-key add, and the cost and time difference are real. While you have a working fob, adding a second one is the easy version of this job. Losing that one fob before you have a backup puts you in a much harder position, and it tends to happen at the worst possible time.

2017 Acura ILX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Ventura, parked along Poinsettia late on a weeknight, I pulled up to meet a woman who introduced herself as an ER nurse before she asked to see my license and insurance.

She wasn't being difficult. She'd done her homework on locksmith scams, she knew what she was looking for, and she wasn't going to hand over a push-button Acura to someone she hadn't vetted. I respect that. I handed over the paperwork before she had to ask a second time.

She still had one working fob, so this was a spare-key add, not an all-keys-lost situation. Easier on the timeline, but still a real programming job. I confirmed the factory FCC ID on her existing fob, matched the replacement to the car, then cut the emergency insert blade that nests inside the fob body. That blade is easy to overlook until the battery goes dead and it becomes the only way into the car.

After programming, I walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons, plus the push-button start. When it responded the same way three times in a row without hesitation, she let out a long breath.

She mentioned she'd called the dealer first. They wanted her to schedule, possibly wait for parts, and she would have needed to get the car there somehow. On site, parked on her own street, was a different conversation entirely. She saved a good chunk and didn't lose a day off.

Acura ILX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost every key for my 2017 Acura ILX. Can you make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2017 ILX smart key is a standard job when you have the right equipment. The process involves putting the vehicle's security system into a reset state through the diagnostic port, registering the new fob so the immobilizer recognizes it, and cutting the emergency insert blade that lives inside the fob. Any previously registered fobs get wiped in that process, so lost keys can't be used to start the car afterward.
