Got a call out to Concha Loma in Carpinteria. 2020 Acura ILX, push-button start, and the owner described it as a half-fail. Doors would unlock fine, but then the dash threw a keyless access warning and the start button sat there doing nothing. She had already swapped the fob battery, which is always the right first move, so I came out ready to dig a little deeper.
I ran through the basics on site. Both door handles, the trunk button, and then I tried holding the fob directly against the start button to see if the car would read it at close range. That last test told me something. It fired right up when the fob was pressed flat against the button. The antenna was seeing the chip but the normal proximity read was falling apart.
Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 she put in was correct and fresh, but the battery clips had been spread open a little, probably from the last time someone pried the case instead of opening it properly. The battery was physically in there but making inconsistent contact. Every button press was causing a tiny voltage dropout, just enough to make the fob look dead to the car.
Straightened the clips, cleaned the contacts, reseated the battery correctly, and then ran the full cycle. Lock, unlock, every button, both door handles, start and off three times in a row. It worked every time without hesitation.
She had the dealer's service number pulled up on her phone. She laughed a little and put it away. Job done in Concha Loma, no tow, no waiting room.
