In Ventura, over in Saticoy, I pulled up to a 2019 ILX that had already confused its owner pretty thoroughly. She'd put in a fresh CR2032 weeks earlier and the doors were responding fine, so she figured the key was good. Then the push-button start started acting up. Sometimes it dropped into accessory mode. Sometimes it just sat there and did nothing.
She kept pressing it. The way people do.
I ran through the start sequence checks in order. Lock and unlock with the fob from outside, watched the LED response on the fob itself, doors responded clean. Then I did the backup function test: foot off the brake, button press, hold the fob up to the button face through the open window, wait for the prompt on the multi-information display, touch the button again. The system acknowledged the fob, the dash lit up the way it should.
That told me the fob was alive. The issue was intermittent, not dead.
When I opened the fob case anyway, just to check, the water indicator on the interior panel had turned. Not a big dramatic failure, just enough internal damage to make the two-way link unreliable under certain conditions.
She needed a new fob registered to the car, and the emergency insert key cut to match. I erased the old fob from the vehicle's memory so it couldn't be used to start the car. Took about forty minutes on site.
The dealer conversation never really came up. She'd already gotten a number from them and decided to call me instead.
