I got a call on a Tuesday evening from someone staying at a place up in Mission Canyon. She was in town for work, had driven up from out of state, and her only TLX key was not cooperating. The push-button start would see the fob sometimes, then act like nothing was there. She had already swapped the CR2032 herself, which was the right instinct, but the behavior was still inconsistent.
When I got to her, I looked at the fob first. The case had been opened before, probably at a dealer or a shop, and one of the battery contact tabs was bent just enough to lose the connection under vibration. The new battery she put in was fine. The contact holding it was not.
I straightened the tab, reseated the battery, closed the case correctly, and then connected to the OBD port to verify the fob was registering cleanly with the vehicle security system. It was. The car was reading the key exactly the way it should have been the whole time.
We walked through every function. Door handle touch unlock on both front doors, the start button, lock and unlock from outside. All of it solid.
She had already called the dealer before she called me. They told her the earliest appointment was two days out and that she might need a full fob replacement. She was leaving the next morning. The whole thing took me about 25 minutes in her driveway, and the fix was a bent piece of metal the width of a fingernail. Dealer never would have caught that in a parts-counter conversation.
