She'd landed late at LAX, took a shuttle to long-term parking, and by the time she reached the car it was past midnight. The fob did nothing. No door unlock, no response from the handle, nothing on the dash when she pressed start.
The emergency blade was in her checked bag. The checked bag was in the trunk. The trunk was locked. She'd done the thing a lot of people do and never thought about where that backup blade was until she needed it.
She called the Acura dealer first. Earliest they could take her was Thursday, two days out, and they were clear that towing was her problem to arrange. A tow company quoted her a number that made her pause. Then she found me.
I drove out to meet her. Got the door open without touching the paint or the weather seal, which matters to people who care about their cars, and she clearly did. Pulled up the key status through the OBD port. Both her fobs were still enrolled, nothing had dropped out of the system. The issue was exactly what it looked like: a dead CR2032 that had taken the fob's ability to wake the push-button system with it. Swapped the battery, cleared the communication fault the system had logged, walked every button on both fobs, confirmed the door handles were reading the fob correctly for touch unlock. Done.
She made it home before sunrise. Skipped the Thursday appointment, skipped the tow, saved a good chunk of what the dealer route would have cost her. The only thing she said she wished she'd done differently was keep that backup blade somewhere she could actually reach it.
